ELA STEEL

INTERVIEW WITH ELA STEEL OF ELA STEEL

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personals stuff...)
I'm Ela Steel. I'm a 25 year old painter who was born in Ontario, Canada. I now live in Texas as a permanent resident and am working on my US citizenship.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
Yes.

How long have you been in business?
I graduated from art school in 2005 and have been painting and sculpting full time since.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
Roughly 40%

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
I'm of course going to continue to create my bizarre paintings. I also really enjoy making pendants from my art, so I'll be making more of those for sure!

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?

Mostly my life, my past experiences/current situations and my observations of interpersonal interaction. I also really like bugs.

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?
It is my life. I'd probably go crazy if I didn't have a way to get this stuff out of my head.

What do you love most about what you make?
I love when people tell me how they relate to one of my pieces. When they share their story it gives me an entirely new perspective on the work and a deeper understanding of it.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
Yes. I take commissions and do custom pieces. I also have been really into portraiture just for fun lately- but it of course has my surreal flair added to it. Not your standard portraits, but something really creative and unique.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Do what you enjoy doing. It's not worth it to try to force yourself into creating a product or working in a style just because you think it will sell better. If you love what you do, your passion will show in your work and people WILL buy it.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Clean up behind me. And bring me food. I'm notoriously neglectful of my diet while I'm working.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
Figure out a system that works for you. Even if it seems completely crazy and scattered to someone else, as long as it makes sense to you it will help you be more efficient.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
Because you can tell when something is made with LOVE and not by soul-sucking corporations!! Basically, buying something from an Etsy seller for $10 makes more of a difference in someone's life than me buying something similar at Walmart.
