What percentage of your income is from "online" sales? About 20%. I also sell at local galleries and craft shows.

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist? Being able to work at home at my own pace, being able to experiment with new designs and new techniques, being able to network with other artists online for inspiration, and being able to blog.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008? I am always thinking up new designs. You never know what surprises tomorrow will bring!

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do? I enjoy every aspect of making my creations and taking photos, so I would be happy to let the little elves do the packaging and going to the post office; organize everything in my studio neatly; and list new items online...and get me Etsy Treasuries!

PROPS TO MINDY FISHER!!!

I WANNA MAKE SURE TO GIVE PROPS TO MINDY! I LOVE HER STYLE!

I went through a phase (not so long ago), when I decided to only focus on small, original paintings. My idea was to keep them affordable, funky & fun. I thought if I could sell enough...I would get a video camera and film the (sped up) process of each one...and start a youtube channel to plug my wares. I found it really difficult to find a particular style that stood out...that didn't look like someone else's work. I've always had a problem defining my own style, and many have warned me that that's my downfall. I've been drawing/painting for so long...and have moved through so many styles....pin-up, frazetta fantasy, disney cute, big-eyed girly stuff, dark stuff, twisted circus type mulan stuff, whimsical light folk, folk pop, primitive, realism, blah...blah....blah. all of it. and combinations of all of it. i never confined myself to any one style. but...now that i'm older, there's a weird worry about "looking like someone else". Anyway...that's me. Holding myself back on certain levels to avoid offending other artist's I don't even know. Which is weird bcuz most of the stuff being done NOW...is in no way ORIGINAL.

Thing with Mindy is....she's got her own style! And probably totally easy & unintentional! The wench! ;) The colors are fun & beguiling. The images trapping, and the energy soothing. All a very wonderful & balanced mix! It would be nice to say that that just comes naturally to some folks, but I believe that more discipline is involved.....to stick with it, develop it...grow with it. I just think it's great!!!

On top of that...when I contacted Mindy and asked if she'd do an interview...and add picks of her work space...she laughed and said that she worked out of a chair in her tiny apartment. That it wasn't much of a studio, and that another thing I love about her creative soul. I insisted that she had to add a pic of herself at work in her chair...which she did! :) Some people think they don't have the talent. Some people think they don't have the time. Some people think they don't have the space, or the proper 'set up' to do their particular art or craft. Mindy is a testimony to the fact that those are all just excuses!!! I'm sure if she didn't have a chair...she'd be painting on the floor, or on her bed! To me Mindy is the type of chick that can work anywhere!

She's got a great style, and good vibes...and a nice product that's small & manageable..and easy to tote around. To me there's comfort in the idea that someone can pack their entire studio in a case or tote...and head off to the park, or wherever. I love that. The stuff that I get myself involved in isn't conducive to that at all! :/

I don't know...I can keep going on, but basically I just think Mindy Fisher is swell! And her work is stellar!!! And...from what I know about the "industry"...I'd say...........BUY SOME MINDY FISHER!!! It's gonna be big!!! If you're into the whole "investment" side of art. Personally I just think it would look good in any home, and definitely brings a smile to everyones face!

INTERVIEW WITH MINDY FISHER OF MINTIMINDI

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personal stuff).
My name is Mindy Fisher. I grew up in south-western New Hampshire. 10
years ago I moved to Chicago for school. I went to Columbia College for a
BA in Set Design.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
No. I work a sometimes part time/ sometimes full time day job as a barista
at a small restaurant.

How long have you been in business?
Well I've had my Etsy shop pretty much since the beginning of Etsy.
However when I started I was making crocheted plush creatures and coin
purses. I was always into drawing and painting more so I switched over to
that.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
I would say about 10 or 20 percent. Honestly, I rarely get online sales.
When people see my work in person they find it much more impressive I
guess. This year I've sold more online so far but through different
venues.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
Well I'll be painting a lot more of my Ornaglyphs. This is the series I'm
working on...single panel comics that can be mixed and matched to create
original surreal comic strips. I have 20 paintings that I haven't even
listed on Etsy...they are in a show right now here in Chicago. I'll
probably have more limited edition buttons made up. I *might* do prints
but I don't know about that. Another thing I hope to work on is hand
painted upholstered furniture with my mom and sister but that is on the
back burner for the time being because my mom was bitten by a dog a few
months ago.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Everything, things that make me scratch my head, things that make other
people scratch their heads, humor.

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?
It's very therapeutic. I can escape from all the boringness and stress
into this crazy, funny world I'm creating...and it makes me happy that I
can let other people into that world. I'm also a strange person who
doesn't fit into a professional atmosphere and hopefully I'll be able to
use my skills to support myself more without having to rely on working for
other people.

What do you love most about what you make?
I love that my stuff is open to interpretation which makes it interactive
for my audience. They don't have to come up with their own narrative...but
the fun colors and my crazy writing is very inviting. It's very cool when
people tell me their interpretations or what they get out of the
paintings. I try not to think about anything when I make these...so when
somebody tells me that they see some social message or tell me I'm making
stuff about the bible that cracks me up. I really enjoy hearing what
people see in my paintings.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders,
swapping or bartering?
I'm open to trade and barter. I've done consignment but not wholesale. And
custom orders I most definitely do. I've done portraits of peoples kids,
signs for a restaurants bathroom doors, and even a cover for a soundtrap
in a recording studio as well as straight paintings.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
If you get bored with what you are doing try something new. The great
thing about working for yourself is that you are not bound to sticking
with the same thing forever. Also don't feel bad about making a profit off
of what you do. Many times I have struggled with this because I think
about how I can't buy many handmade items because I can't afford them, and
neither can most of my friends. I say start high and see what happens. I
recently had someone ask me to make something for them and it was
something I hadn't made before. I was going to have to buy materials I
wasn't familiar with and it was going to be a challenge to make something
huge in my apartment...so I took all of that into consideration and went
high with the price. My client didn't even blink an eye and I thought that
they might haggle. In fact I probably could have gone higher!

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
I would have them add the hardware to the backs of my canvas and frame my
paper paintings. Also they would take photographs and list my stuff on my
website, etsy, and flickr. And last but not least I would have them do
housework and grocery shopping.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working
efficiently?
Well, when I work on stuff I will work on at least 3 paintings at once.
First I sketch all of them out...then I paint each color on all three. My
last steps are "lettering", touching up my mistakes and spraying sealer.
Taking your time can sometimes be the most efficient thing you can do. I
tend to rush then I end up smudging somewhere on my painting and have to
go back and fix it...which ends up pissing me off and not making the whole
process any faster.

If you are someone who can't stay organized (like me) I would say the best
thing to do is to just have a shoebox or a bin of some kind with all of
the materials you are using at that moment. That way it's all in one place
and you can dig through that for whatever you need.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
It isn't often that I get to buy handmade items but when I do get
something I treat myself to something that I think is going to be well
made and that is something not many other people are going to have. I'm
willing to pay more for something that I know I am going to like for a
long time and is going to be durable. Less is more.
As far as why selling is important to me...my mom is an upholsterer. She
built her business from the ground up because she couldn't stand working
for other people. Although she had to devote her life to her business it
did give her flexibility and independence...and now that I've been working
for smaller companies I never want to work for any kind of corporate
company again if I can help it.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your
life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
Health is a big one since I am uninsured. My partner also struggles with a
life long mental illness and has to rely on the city's program for help.
It takes a lot of work on our half to read up about the medications they
prescribe to him because they usually don't know much.

Household chores and repairs are other areas where I am becoming more
resourceful. If you learn how to fix things on your own you save a LOT of
money. I could stand to learn more about cooking but that's what my
boyfriend is for.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
In my fantasy world I would live closer to my family on the east coast. I
would live in a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment (one would be my painting room,
the other would be my partners music studio). I would be able to afford
health insurance at least for my partner. And I would get to travel at
least once year and maybe we could have some cats or dogs. And it would be
especially nice if this would all be possible through my own means of
course.

An alternate fantasy I have is living in a camper or a van...something
where my life is stripped down to the bare essentials and I would just
sell my art as I traveled or at festivals. I dunno...this might be more of
a where would you like to be 5 years ago.

Google NoteBook...

Another thing I've found helpful...I was trying to important all bookmarks into Explorers favorites, and came across something called "google links"...where links are stored in an online database (to be accessed from anywhere). Sounds good to have as a back-up, and saves me having to move my bookmarks every time I get a new computer...or if I'm not at home. Google suggests using their Notebook for organizing links into categories. It could be a little better with the addition of 'sub-categories', but I like it none-the-less.

I'm in the process of moving all my links into my Google Notebook. I have a ton, so it's taking a while. But I think it's also brilliant to use as an on-line journal, to keep notes, project ideas, use as a contact book, or for recipes. Lots of possibilities! A handy little tool. Would be great also for writers to layout a book, as it can be done in chapters. It opens easily off the browser...so when I an idea hits...you can just open it up....jot some stuff down and close it.

FROM A BIDDERS PERSPECTIVE:
Alchemy rocks for artist's & crafters looking for extra work! There's little to complain about. People post things they're looking for...and we respond if interested. And...then the requester responds if interested. Simple enough. My only suggestions to those who request items are...

1) Be more inspiring, and more "exact" with your post! Some of them are great, but most of them are extremely vague and dry. It's not some automotive arena where writing, "looking for two exterior door handles to a 1974 dodge van" is gonna work. Artist's need to be INSPIRED! There has to be some personal exchange of energy. That's just coming from personal experience. Of course it depends on what one is looking for, but if they're looking for art...one-of-a-kind, original, and made from the heart...if they want something that's top quality, and full of feel-good energy, etc...then the creator has to be inspired. I read through a lot of Alchemy requests, and it feels like a lot of people rush when posting. Take your time, and really put your soul into it. I think that makes all the difference in the world!

I've bid (and won) a few project where the ideal price was not my ideal price, but the person posting the request inspired me so greatly, and the item was so unique & fun...that I just wanted to do it anyway! Artist's are weird like that too! :) Sometimes it's not about the money.

Other ideas for successful Alchemy Requests....

2) Don't say...."I will own this design outright. You will not have any permission to use it, except in your portfolio!" :/ (Cardinal Rule #1: Don't piss off an Artist...if you want anything from them!!!) Try saying..."Would I have complete ownership of this design? Could I copyright it?"
I don't think I need to explain.
3) Try to put a little more energy into what an item costs to make....especially keeping in mind that it might be a one-of-a-kind item. Consider material costs, costs to run equipment, time and energy. What would you charge to make the same thing for someone? For a stranger, not a friend or family member. Do you really want a beautiful, lasting piece of handmade greatness, or do you really want something from big-box mart? It's a good question...and your price will tell the truth.
4) Have fun with Alchemy, and use your imagination. Use the subject line for adding: price negotiable, or will add to price with products from my shop, etc. And...don't lie. That sounds strange, but I've come across a few people that have submitted request with an ideal price, and after bidding and submitting designs (taking time)...they've written back saying that they will only accept it in "trade" for their work. Maybe it's a way around "swapping" being banned from Alchemy, who knows. But...there was nothing I wanted/needed from their shops, and wouldn't have taken the time had I known that up front. I don't mind helping people out at all, but something about that isn't right.

Things have dropped off here. I keep posting in the Etsy forum for anyone that wants to do an interview, but.................I'm not getting any response at all. Everyone has at least one blog, and maybe not enough time on their hands. The internet is like that. Takes up a lot more time and energy then people think. It's a lot more difficult to get noticed then would be assumed, and...it's not all simple & straightforward.

I thought that EtsyCafe was a pretty good idea, but not 'catchy' enough it would seem. I thought the concept was simple, and I tried to make it as easy as possible. I think folks tend to lean towards the cute, minimalist blogs that are small, personal collectives of 'favorites'...and above that...they're looking for something super popular. This blog is neither. It occupies some 'other' space that maybe people don't easily get the point of. Some do. Some realize that any promotion is helpful.

So, anyway...what to do? Just let it sit here?!? After all the time I've invested, and all the great people that have submitted interviews...just let it lay? I don't feel comfortable doing that. I guess I'll have to start (personally) requesting interviews from sellers; convo them and ask them if they have time. Move into that 'favorite' mode, which I kinda wanted to avoid. Etsy can only "feature" one artist at a time, and I'm pretty sure they have 'criteria'. I wanted to avoid any sort of favoritism...and just have open to everyone...to feature themselves.

But...this place needs a push. Suppose I could also start posting actual articles as well. Between interviews. I don't know what people want as far as a blog goes? I have my other Schroeder Sister Blog that I ramble in, that's for my own personal work and promotion. Should I merge the two? Arg...maybe I should let the coffee kick in first.

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personal stuff).
I'm from sunny Doncaster, in the UK. I studied fine art at Sheffield University, only to realise 3 months in I didn't want to be an artist I preferred craft. I've been making things ever since. I dabble in so many crafts, photography, card making, plush, quilting, weaving, felting etc etc but at the moment I'm concentrating on teaching myself jewellery making and my felt work, I'm also dipping back into photography again.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
At the moment I work full time in a large bookshop, only crafting during my spare time.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
A very very small percentage so far!

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
It's the only way of finding something truly unique, also when you buy a handmade item, it's more personal, there's a person behind it rather than a faceless company, you know it took time and care to be made and that's important to me.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
I would probably say I find most of my inspiration on etsy, I love browsing the site! Also I find working in a bookshop helps as I have instant access to really beautiful arts and craft books.

What do you love most about what you make?
At the moment I really love colour and I love that about my Feltpods. I really love this range as it's a product I'd buy myself, I enjoy making them as its quiet a tedious process, which is how I like to work. I love my jewellery range because I'm so proud of myself for being able to make them, I'm currently just learning jewellery making so it's a pleasure to see a finished product.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I have done custom orders before and would love to start swapping work with other etsians. As for wholesale, I'm just starting to look into if it's viable for my products, with their time to make and RRP's

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
I think the one thing I've learnt over the past few years and especially the past few months, is concentrate on one thing at a time. I love so many different crafts that I used try doing too much at once. Over the past few months I've learnt to single out a certain idea or type of craft, which has banished most of my previous frustrations. I'm not sure if other people suffer from this problem but it's a good lesson to learn if you do!

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
I don't have any tips, as I think I need the tips! I'm not very happy with my workspace at the moment and I'm quite a messy person. Mentally I'm very organized, I make lists a lot, I suppose I work efficiently especially with my Feltpod range, when I want to make a few new designs I will make sure I get them all cut out and ready to be sewn in my spare time. I like to make the process sort of production line like.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
I would absolutely love to not need to work or at least only work part time. I'd love to be a known crafter and have sufficient sales to actually be making a profit (as at the minute buying supplies is cancelling out any profit I make) I plan on having a house with a real nice workspace. Dreams!

Buying/selling handmade is important in abolishing the myth of the 'starving
artist.' The arts are terribly important, and there is such immense talent
hiding out there. That buying hand made is becoming popular is very
exciting, because it gives artists and crafters a chance to become
successful.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
In the famous words of Jack Black, "You cannot manufacture inspirado."
Inspiration comes randomly for the most part, but listening to music helps.
It's also incredibly inspiring to look at the work of other artists.

What do you love most about what you make?
I love bold shapes and contrasting colors and plain, bold graphics. I also
love to work with my hands and working with clay. For Ink Thief, the 'zine I
offer in my store, I love getting contributions from other writers.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping
or bartering?
I love the barter system!

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Same advice for everyone: Do what you love.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
Clean up after yourself every few days! I should take my own advice.

In a house with a yard so my dog can run around, and in this house will be a
designated craft room.

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personal stuff).

My name is Lauren Fleischer and I'm a product designer, crafter and teacher in San Francisco, CA. My business is called Sweet Meats, because my first line is a series of plush toys that look like various cuts of meats--steaks, pork chops and the like. I live with my wonderful fiance and a really ornery miniature parrot named Elvis.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?

Sort of. I run my own business full-time, but I spend at least half my time on things like bookkeeping, marketing and communicating with customers. Hopefully I will grow the business enough that I can afford to have employees take care of some of that so that I can have more time for the craftier stuff.

How long have you been in business?

I've been in business since July of 2006, but I only took it full-time in September of 2007.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?

About 80%.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?

A new line of plush toys! I'm doing animals this time--I mean live, whole animals rather than just pieces of them--but true to form they will be both irresistible and kind of creepy.

Also, a brand new web site at www.sweet-meats.com, due to launch in early April.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?

Everything. Music, nature shows on PBS, window displays, people on the sidewalk. Everything.

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?

Positively, of course! I always feel my most fulfilled when I am working on something creative and really using my hands, whether it be knitting, baking or playing music.

What do you love most about what you make?

Putting something new and thoughtful into the world.

Do you offer any services such as wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?

All of the above, and then some, such as gift wrapping.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?

Stop underpricing yourselves! When you add up the cost of materials, a living wage for yourself, and some profit or overhead, very often the price of the pieces you create seems unreasonable, especially when compared to something similar produced by a factory, or if you normally give them away as gifts. But underpricing makes customers take your work less seriously and hurts crafters who are trying to make a living with their crafts and can't afford to compete with "hobby" crafters.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?

All of my cleaning and bookkeeping.

Do you have any studio tips for staying organized, and working efficiently?

Write everything down. Keep a notebook at home, in the car, and in every bag you bring outside with you. Also, read David Allen's book "Getting Things Done." I don't use everything in it, but it helped me develop a really good system for filing and to-do lists.

I believe in supporting creativity, small business and quality.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do you strive to be "independent, resourceful, & creative"?

I strive to be resourceful and creative in all areas of my life, but I've still got a long way to go. What little free time I have, though, is mostly devoted to my band, Pants Pants Pants. We're all very interested in both the musical and visual aspects of performing, so this it's been a good way to combine a lot of my creative urges while maintaining a social life.

Where would like to be in 10 years?

Working in a studio outside of my apartment, ideally with an employee or two.

My name is Pam Geisel and I live Yellow Springs, Ohio, with my husband and 2 cats. My education and work experience has been as a graphic designer and also as an instructor of both graphic design and desktop publishing. While I was teaching I incorporated lessons on being creative.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
I’ve always been an artist but I am now crafting full-time.

How long have you been in business?
1 year

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
15-20% are on-line sales, the rest are from craft shows.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
I’ve already added quilted postcards (yes, you really can mail them!) and watercolor paintings of quilts that are matted with a sewn quilt square. This year I also plan to add quilt patterns and fused, abstract design using lots of scrap fabrics.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
I am inspired by everything, so this is a tough question. (a) Nature, (b) shapes and the secondary patterns they make when placed together, and (c) sometimes the fabric tells me what it wants to be.

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?
It’s like breathing...it’s a part of me that’s always there.

What do you love most about what you make?
Making art that is visually interesting is my goal, but what I really enjoy about quilting is how tactile it is.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I already do Custom orders and swapping and I’m open to wholesale and bartering.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
I think that everyone is born being creative, so try to remember what it felt like to be creative when you were a child. Do what you love and keep striving to come up with new ideas.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Sewing bindings, sleeves and labels because it’s not the creative part.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
Figure out what kind of organizational system works best for you and take care of mail, bills, orders, etc. when they come in instead of letting them pile up into a mountain of work.

Buying handmade is important to me because it supports another person directly and encourages them to stay creative.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
Every area of my life that I can (except cooking!). How I approach problem solving and dealing with obstacles.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
Still married and living in Yellow Springs and still quilting and making art, but maybe a little better known!.

Hello, my name is Edi Royer. I live with my boyfriend of 8 years, Jesse, and our pomeranian, Harley. We live in rural Iowa and love the piece and quite of the country. For my 'real job' I work in a factory that makes and assembles semi transmissions where I run machines. The bright side is that they pay for my schooling. I am working on my MBA right now and have yet to choose a concentration. When I'm not scrapbooking, I enjoy snowmobiling, mud dragging, and spending time with my family and friends. I love being out, but am a home-body by nature.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
I sure wish I could scrapbook for a full-time job, but it's not happening yet. Right now my sales just support my ever-growing stash of new supplies :)

What percentage of your income is from 'online' sales?
Right now about 15% of my sales are from online. I do craft shows in the fall that really help my local income. I hope to make this about 50% by the end of the year when my shop gets going a little more. I just opened my Etsy store in January of 2008.

Please share why 'buying/selling handmade' is important to you...
Buying handmade helps out the little guy...like me. Buying mass-produced products has its place in things like toilet paper, but not in crafts. Crafters do their thing because they enjoy it and want to share it with the world. I started my business by realizing there were people out there who wanted scrapbooks made, but either didn't have the time or didn't want to invest in all the supplies. I love everything about paper crafting and saw this as the perfect opportunity. Why not do something I love...and make money at it :)

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
The world around me is my inspiration. I see color combinations everywhere, page designs in junk mail, etc. Inspiration is truly everywhere! As for specific scrapbooking inspiration, I find tons in magazines dedicated to scrapbooking. Creating Keepsakes, Scrapbooks Etc, Simple Scrapbooks (which I was featured in!!!), Memory Makers, etc. I love the website www.twopeasinabucket.com for great inspiration. Their member gallery is the best :)

What do you love most about what you make?
I love the fact that I am helping to preserve peoples' memories for a lifetime. That is why I named my company Memories for Life Scrapbooks. Being a part of a person's life and story through their scrapbooks is truly amazing. I love helping people create treasures that they will have to pass down for many generations. And, of course, I just love the process. I love working with my hands, getting them dirty, and seeing my finished product.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
My business is based around custom orders. I do make pre-made albums, greeting cards, etc. But the main party of my business is making custom albums and wedding invitations for people. I am able to customize any of my pre-made albums as well. I love doing custom work :)

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
My best piece of advice: 'Enjoy the Process.' This is my personal mantra when it comes to scrapbooking. Don't make a job out of it...have fun with it!

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
I like to keep items for projects together so when I get time to work on a specific project, everything is already together and ready to go. I also like lots of shelving and containers to keep my supplies in.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
Of course I would love to be crafting for a full-time job. But if that doesn't work out, I would like to be a manager...but still not sure where or in what type of area. I just know I don't want to run a machine for the rest of my life. I'm keeping my eyes open for new positions all the time.

What do you create & sell?
I create chunky style art works, smaller pieces on small wooden blocks and larger pieces on a rigid type foamboard. I use store bought canvas's as well. I especially like to create my Glamour Girls.. Quirky gals doing all sorts of activities and my KItchen Plaques are also a favorite. I love to use thick paint and create all kinds of textures on my "Art Plaques" they have a lovely bas relief finish.

How long have you been in business?
I started a Faux Finish business in 1993 and have been creating my "Art Plaques" ever since. I have dabbled with all sorts of styles and genre's over the years.. I like to create happy fun loving works that a person can relate to. I also like the inspirational aspects artwork has.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
I would say 30 percent as I still do a lot of custom murals and blackboards for homes and businesses around the continent. I like the Functional side of art as well.. My Art Blackboards hang in many restaurants and pubs!

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist?
The freedom to create.. I think all artists can say they are driven..It is a great release!! I must be creating something on a daily basis it is a must!

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
I plan on introducing even more texture, layers, metallics and found objects into my work. A mixture of all types of colors and textures. I would also like to do some landscapes in my bas relief style.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Oh.. I would have them get to all the base coating I have to do.. I generally start out with a black palate so I go through tons of black paint!! This step I could live without..I want to get right to the painting!!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Lis-el Crowley and I live in Windsor, CT. I have been creating since I can remember. I make pottery, jewelry and fused glass among other things. I am always trying something new. Creativity is as important to me as breathing. I am also an interfaith minister and lead a meditation group and teach classes in spiritual development and metaphysics. I am married, have three children and one grandchild. My two youngest children are both studying art in college.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
Yes, sort of. I run a retail art and artisan gallery where I teach classes as well as selling my work and the work of other local artists and artisans in CT. So I am working full time in art & craft, but not all of that time is spent creating. I love teaching and helping others discover, and develop their creative side. I am a level 1 certified art clay silver instructor and teach metalsmithing, fused glass, wire jewelry, mosaics and more. I also do some shows and am an authorized distributor of Art Clay Silver and Gold. The name of my Gallery is Art & Soul and it is located in Windsor, CT.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
Maybe 20%. I just started on Etsy. I sell supplies on ebay.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
To me, a handmade item is filled with the love of the artist/artisan for their creative process. It is unique and has life and vitality. It has a soul. This energy adds immensely to the value of the item. Also, creative expression is essential to well being. We need art in our lives. By purchasing handmade items we are supporting artists in their creative process.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
I receive a lot of inspiration from the materials I work with. The beautiful colors of dichroic glass and the shimmer of silver sugges so many things I can do with them. I am also inspired by masters in the fields in which I work. Nature, art, everything basically can be a source of inspiration for me. Many times it is simply the joy of making stuff that inspires me and the joy on my students' faces when they have created something beautiful and pleasing.

What do you love most about what you make?
I strive for beauty in my work. I love it when what I make is visually pleasing. I especially love it brightening someone else's life in some way.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
Yes to all of the above. My home is filled with items I have gathered through the years by bartering with other artists/artisans. I am happy to create custom orders and have sold wholesale for years.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Make sure you love every minute of what you do. Pour that love into your work and it will bless you and anyone else who comes in contact with it.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
Make lists. I'm not the most organized person in the world, but lists definitely help me.
Where would like to be in 10 years?
Doing what I'm doing, in a warmer climate. Making more money and being debt free.

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personal stuff).

My name is Cary Walters, I live in a small rural mountain town in Northern California.
I'm married, with a 4-year old son.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?

Well, my part-time day job is doing graphic design work, and when I'm not busy with my kid, I'm usually crafting something. So I guess you could say I'm always creating or doing artwork of some kind.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?

At this point, a very small one! Maybe 1%? I also sell my stuff during the summer at our Farmer's Market and various craft shows, where I make many more sales than I do on-line. I think my work really does well in real life, where people can pick up and hold the items, and see the detail that went into it.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...

I've been a crafter all my life, and I love the touch of the human hand. As my high-school art teacher used to say (and it's stuck with my all this time!) -- "You are not a machine, why should your lines be perfectly straight?" And I think that's an idea that should be promoted to everyone -- that imperfection is human and beautiful. Our society has such a strange dichotomy of individualism and yet conformity at all costs!

Furthermore, I think buying and selling handmade supports those activities that are traditionally done by women, and it's important to me to support anything empowers women, especially mothers who want to work at home.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?

Definitely the natural world around me is an inspiration. I'm lucky to live an a mountain paradise with trees, streams, meadows, deer, butterflies and more all around me every day. I try to capture some of that peace in my work. I also love children's book illustrations, graphic design from the 30s and 40s, vintage textiles, and of course the whole world of reference books.

What do you love most about what you make?

I love the colors, the sweetness, the hope and joy I try to convey. I'd like to introduce just a little magic and whimsy into our everyday life, which is so often full of tedious details.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?

Yes! To all those things!

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?

The thing that makes me keep going is the thought that I'm doing work I love, and getting better at it with every piece I make. And -- you have got to keep with it! Don't give up!

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?

Um, not really. I basically create in a mess, but I like it. As my nephew says "Chaos is an information-rich environment." Isn't that a great quote? However, I do know where everything is, even if no one else does. So it works for me. The only thing you can't be messy with is records. Keep good records, and you won't worry at tax time.

Where would like to be in 10 years?

I'd like to have a small business that supports my family, maybe with a few employees, doing my artwork. Ultimately I'd like to go into the supply side, focusing on design work, which is my true love, and not do so much production. For instance, I'd love to market my exclusive heat transfers.

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personal stuff).
I’m a single mom of two teenage kids. I am currently working as a substitute teacher in my kids’ ISD while I obtain alternative certification to teach full time next fall! I also am highly creative (always have been) and have two Etsy.com shops: Good Scents and Silver Tree Jewelry.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
No, but that is my goal, quite honestly. It may not happen for 5 years or more, but it is my goal to have a business location (brick and mortar) selling my products locally while I also sell them via Etsy.com.

How long have you been in business?
I began making my products about 6.5 years ago. I owned a local gift shop (now closed). I’d go to the local market (World Trade Center, Dallas) and when I just couldn’t find the items that I knew would sell, I began making them myself. I began with candles, moved into soaps and lotions, then into the rest of the bath & body products. My sparkling Swarovski© jewelry came into production sometime during this time.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
About 50%. I do have a significant quantity of local customers for my candles and bath & body products. I have wholesale customers, too.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
My personal commitment is to always be working on something. I have a great sugar scrub, but it melts in the heat of summer (and therefore, I can’t ship it). So I’m working on a new scrub that will be much more heat resistant. Of course, new scents are always being evaluated. For jewelry, I have a lot of new stones and crystals. I find myself drawn, this year, to turquoise and brown, gold and blue colorations.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Something within. I cannot really explain it, but I seem to have an inner knowing about things. I do examine the other products ‘out there’ and while I know the quality is fantastic on many, I also know that no one is offering a funky, fun, high quality product line mine (Good Scents).

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?
Affect my life? It IS my life. Without the ability to be creative, my life would not be worth living, quite honestly.

What do you love most about what you make?
The fact that I can make pretty much anything that I set my mind to do. I have a great many ‘crafty’ skills: I make stained glass, paint, sew, etc.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
Oh, absolutely. I welcome wholesale. Remember that my bath & body products (Good Scents) came from my frustration with being unable to find quality products at market that weren’t either overpriced or everywhere I looked in competitive stores. It does a store no good to have no differentiation with other stores. Having the exact same set of products offers the customer no real benefit. I welcome custom orders, too!

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
To believe in what you make. Every product, provided it is made with attention to quality, has a customer. You just have to believe and to work to find that customer.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Can, I have a maid instead? I find that I’d rather work on my products than clean my house.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
A fabulous filing system is important to me. I make a lot of different products. And without careful files, I would always be looking for my labels. I have my raw ingredients in one area of my work space. And my finished goods carefully organized in yet another. I do alphabetize as much as possible, too. So if I’m looking for Paradise Flowers fragrance (which I custom blend) I’m not pushing aside Amaretto or Basil Sage Mint to find it…

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
It used to be that the artisan was the heart and soul of the community. Creating fabulous things in small quantities, made the items more precious. And more respected. Then came the huge manufacturing entities, selling everything from A to Z, and the soul left the business. The heart went comatose and the head took over, counting the shekels and cutting every corner possible for greater enrichment.

I’m definitely a capitalist. I love making money. I consider money a great boon to my world! But I’m not going to cut quality to make a few pennies more. It simply isn’t worth it to me. To downgrade and make inferior products is something that I simply cannot do. But big companies either have lost touch with their soul (or never had one in the first place) and they care not a whit about it.

If you buy handmade, you are pushing the pendulum back. To where quality and standards were more important than speed and profit. As mentioned, I’m definitely in favor of profit. But, the world is somewhat out of balance, at the present, and places like Etsy.com, and artisans like myself are helping to bring some fiscal and creative sanity to the wider world.

Finally, you are supporting small business. Everyone knows, if you listen to the news or read the paper, that small business is the utter backbone of our society. In many cases, you are supporting a woman run business, like mine. And in some cases, you are supporting a single mom (again like me) who is trying to do the best for her family while providing beauty to the world at large.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
I write novels, too. Any literary agents are welcome to write to me! I’ve been trying to break through that concrete ceiling (and find an agent) for nearly 4 years.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
In 10 years, my last child will have been out of my house for about 5 years. I will have taught for about 10 years. And it will be time, I think, to start looking into that smaller house. In a smaller town, and starting my store. At least, that is my personal dream.

My name is Amber and I live just outside of Detroit MI. I'm an avid antique shopper. I love art and music of all kinds.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
I'm not a full time artist per-say; but that would be a dream come true for me if I was able to achieve that status someday!

How long have you been in business?
My ETSY shop has only been in existence for about three and 1/2 Months. I started as a buyer and decided that I would try my hand at selling my pieces o ETSY instead of the other venues I had used in the past.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
Right now, a very small percentage (under 10%), but I hope to increase that in the near future by taking on custom orders and perhaps wholesale if things go well.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
Tons of amazing new pieces that will always be one of a kind! I have some lovely stock that I've been collecting. I've already started to re-purpose many of the items. I plan on having a variety of price categories and new style for my shoppers very soon as well.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Taking old forgotten trinkets and recycling them to create new treasures, holds such a complete sense of satisfaction for me! The past is such a beautiful thing. Antique items have their own special story, each piece is like it's own little book.

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?
I'm constantly looking at things and calculating in my mind what I could use them for! Almost anything can be re-purposed in to something new and exciting if you set your mind to it!

What do you love most about what you make?
I adore the fact that I use real antiques and pieces of history!

I am always willing to hear from customers. I love custom orders, consulting with a person and using their family heirlooms to create remembrance pieces is one of the things I love to do most.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
I would say that I think the most important thing to remember is to try your best. Always make sure your product is something you could have your name on and be proud of.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
ORGANIZE! I have so many bits and bobbles that my design area sometimes looks like a tornado hit when I'm done with a day of creating. It would be like a wish from a genies bottle to have a clean up and organizing crew!

That's what my elves are for! ;)

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you.
I think a handmade product is always better. In bath and body products or edibles I love the thought of no chemicals or preservatives. Why add all those extra things that your body doesn't need. One of a kind items are always appealing and how about giving credit to those people out there who are striving on a totally self sufficient lifestyle, It's really a great way to look at things.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
I shop at thrift stores, antique sales and I can't pass a garage sale without stopping in for a second. I mean, what if you find that hidden treasure in a box of old shoes.... you never know! I'm extremely resourceful, everything has a purpose if you put your mind to it. As far as Independence, I think it's important to always keep a part of yourself that's just for you regardless of where your life takes you. Having a sense of mystery inside your heart never hurts!

Where would like to be in 10 years?
Working full time as an artist. I would love to have a little studio, in a secluded location with a beautiful view and peaceful surroundings to create in.

My name is Liona Jollota and I am located in Halifax, NS, Canada. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was only 3 years old and I started designing patterns for my Barbie dolls when I was only 7 or 8.

No. I work as a senior analyst for an IT consulting firm (my degree is computer science and math) and I also own a yarn shop. Eventually, I'd like to be able to knit full time.

How long have you been in business?
29 years (since age 15)

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
An ever evolving selection of shawls, scarves, wraps, hats, mittens, belts and bags.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Yarns and Fibers - whenever I see a new yarn I am inspired to combine it with other colours and textures to create a new design.

How does being CREATIVE effect your life?
Being creative is something I have to do every day--like breathing. It is a complete change from my day job.

What do you love most about what you make?
I enjoy putting different colors and textures together to create something with a practical purpose, such as keeping you warm in winter.

Yes, I do wholesale. I love custom orders. I am open to swapping except that I do not wear jewelry. I would consider shawl pins that I could use to display my shawls. I would love to swap for hand spun, hand painted and hand dyed yarns.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
If I had it to do over again I think I would have put more time and effort into my art when I was younger. I paid my tuition for my degree by selling my hand knit designs and then I spend too much time on my IT career and not enough time on my knitting for a few years. Now I would like to knit full time and I'm too dependent on the income from my other job.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Taking pictures of me items to list on line--photography is not one of my strengths. Cleaning my work area and paperwork for taxes.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
I am very efficient--that is always one of my strengths on my performance appraisal from my day job. I keep organized by making lists--I even have a to do list for my vacation days.

I love making handmade items. If I could sell enough of them then I could do it full time. I have not been very good at buying handmade but recently I've started buying whatever I can at my local Farmer's market.

I am definitely independent in all aspects of my life. I try to be creative even in my IT job--I encourage my team to consider solutions that are way outside of the box and we have a lot of fun doing it.

Sitting on the deck at my summer home (which is out in the boonies) knitting full time and selling my creations online and through a local Farmer's market on Saturdays mornings.

What do you create & sell?
I have two shops on Etsy, with two very different products. My first passions are knitting and animals, and I have combined those two loves in my Etsy shop: http://woolies.etsy.com - here you will find all kinds of knitted/felted stuffed animals, as well as other knitted items. But, as time goes by, woolies has evolved into primarily stuffed animals. Then, because I needed another outlet and because my impatient side has come out (knitting animals takes a while), I started making pendants. They are for sale at http://busterandboo.etsy.com - I use fabulous japanese washi and chiyogami papers. I decoupage them onto alphabet tiles, and VOILA you have the prettiest pendants! Woolies has been in business for about 5 years, but only very active since I found Etsy. Buster and Boo is a new venture.

About 90%. I also do craft fairs, and I sell in a brick and mortar store, Bohemia Tucson.

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist?
I love the process of creating. When I'm knitting, I love the progression, the colors, the textures. The animal comes alive as I knit it, it develops character and a name. Sometimes it's very hard to let them go to their new homes! When I'm making my pendants, again, it's the process - choosing the papers, cutting, gluing - the progression.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
Lots more animals in Woolies. In Buster and boo, I am teaming up with a clay artist. Also, instead of just flowers or designs on the pendants, stay tuned for little animals, zodiac and other cool new ideas!

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Packaging and Mailing! Oh, and can I please have a professional photographer to take my pictures (I am notoriously bad at this aspect, but working on it....)

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist?
Being able to bring amazing, handmade, well made items to the public. Having access to making friends with other amazing indie artists, and better yet- their creations!

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
More hand-forged, artisan pieces! I'm getting back to my roots people! Also a bridal collection for spring and summer 2008!

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
I would probably give "studio elves" the task of listing my items online. Photos are a must for me to do myself. If i had it my way i would sit at my bench in my studio and create all day. Listening to classical music with the door locked!

Buying handmade items is important because it is a unique item that will never be exactly like another...Even if the same design is repeated there will always be something in "your" piece that is unique. Also the time and care a person puts into their work, you know that you are getting a quality piece of work that was made with love.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Most of my inspiration comes from nature and the earth. I love doing designs with flowers and including natural products like wood and shell into my pieces. I also love to antique and distress my pieces for a rustic feel to them.

What do you love most about what you make?
What I love most about my work is that 98% of it is all customizable.I work mainly with Polymer Clay and Felting. I have 16 colors that my jewelry is available in with over 21 designs, and 2 different finishes when dealing when dealing with antiqued items. I love giving my buyers lots of choices so if they like a design they can get it different colors to go with different outfits....Or they can get the same piece for a friend in a different color...Also it makes it a unique piece.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
Well almost all of my jewelry is a custom order because of color choices and such...I haven't done any wholesales...I'm not sure if I ever will...It would have to be under agreeable guidelines as to not devalue my work.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Work really really hard, never give up and to truly love what it is you do.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
LOL no, my studio is constantly disorganized...but I always know where everything is. I think artists in general are a little disorganized, I just think that you have to have a system that works for you. I for instance have everything in little containers...but I never seem to put that container in the same spot twice...

Where would like to be in 10 years?
In ten years I would love to be a recognized designer and able to support my family with this income.

It is my life. I'd probably go crazy if I didn't have a way to get this stuff out of my head.

I love when people tell me how they relate to one of my pieces. When they share their story it gives me an entirely new perspective on the work and a deeper understanding of it.

Yes. I take commissions and do custom pieces. I also have been really into portraiture just for fun lately- but it of course has my surreal flair added to it. Not your standard portraits, but something really creative and unique.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?

Do what you enjoy doing. It's not worth it to try to force yourself into creating a product or working in a style just because you think it will sell better. If you love what you do, your passion will show in your work and people WILL buy it.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?

Clean up behind me. And bring me food. I'm notoriously neglectful of my diet while I'm working.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?

Figure out a system that works for you. Even if it seems completely crazy and scattered to someone else, as long as it makes sense to you it will help you be more efficient.

Because you can tell when something is made with LOVE and not by soul-sucking corporations!! Basically, buying something from an Etsy seller for $10 makes more of a difference in someone's life than me buying something similar at Walmart.

My name is Murray Adams Blanchette I work my home just outside of Philadelphia. I went to school for Art Education, but never taught full time, instead, I got a desk job and started making things on the side. It wasn't until about 6 years ago I was able to quit my job and pursue my dream fulltime. A lot has happened between then and now, and after a hiatus of sorts, I'm ready to dip my toes in again. I work in a variety of mediums, all pretty much related to some sort of assemblage--miniature sculptures, jewelry, embellished sewing projects.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
I am a full time mother, so I feel guilty saying I'm a full time artist since both jobs require so much time and energy! Anyway... I am a mother first, and I try to cram my artistic endeavors into 15 minutes here, 30 minutes there.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
Currently 75% to 90%. I am not selling in any shops currently and the thought of preparing for a Craft Show with two little ones scurrying around is enough to drive me over the edge. My only outside orders currently are custom orders for people who I've sold to previously.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
Buying and selling handmade is important to me for a number of reasons, the least complicated being the simple fact that I feel I'm making a difference in the world. I am able to provide something beautifully handmade to someone who may otherwise not be able to afford something similar or worse, who may spend their money on an inferior product, mass produced and tainted by everything that that typically involves.It is also important to me to feel as though the money I spend on something, goes to the person it should, instead of the growing number of middle men.

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Vintage finds, my children, art, everyday necessity

What do you love most about what you make?
I love when I can take scraps and bits of nothing and made something beautiful and useful . I love that I make things that my children's children or your children's children will one day touch.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I do wholesale and custom orders. I used to swap, but am currently not able to do it since all of my profit needs to be able to go right back into materials and supplies.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
If you love it, you can make it work. Don't be afraid to start slow and have confidence in yourself. EVERYONE had to start at the beginning, there's no other way! Don't be afraid to ask questions and utilize as many resources as you can find (like Etsy Cafe!!), you'd be amazed how much help and support is out there if you just ask for some!

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
I NEED tips on staying organized! I try to sort things once a month--you know the bits that get shoved in the corner when you're in a rush. I also have a ton of tins in my studio which I've labeled with magnets so they are removable, that way if I've say, gone through almost all of my belt buckles, I can take the tag off and put something else in there that may have outgrown it's smaller tin. In an attempt to keep the surfaces of my studio clutter free, I'm planning on putting up some peg board. Other than that I'm a mess!!

Where would like to be in 10 years?
I'd like to have a studio space outside my home, complete with a little boutique and hours by appointment. My children will be in school by then, and I think I would enjoy having deliberate time and space to dedicate to creating.

Well let’s see, first and for most I’m a full time mother but I also put in a number of hours Monday-Friday with my paper creations.. I guess you could say I have several full time jobs.... Between the laundry service, chef and maid services I run I somewhere in all that find time to play with paper and raise my children....

I’d probably have to say about 75% of my income comes from online.....I also sell within my community; as well...that’s how I originally got started creating cards.....

I love handmade cards.....There’s nothing better then opening your mailbox and in the middle of all the junk mail and bills find a little something to put a smile on your face....

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
I get about 90% of my paper piecing patterns from my son’s coloring books. They know that Mommy gets to look through them first to see if there’s anything in there she can use and then they get them.....I’m always looking for “corny” sayings to go along with my paper piecings....My husband just laughs at some of the stuff I come up with and I do too. If you can’t laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at...LOL....

What do you love most about what you make?
I love doing my paper piecings the most and having someone buy then and tell me their scrapbooking pages have never looked better. Or having someone email me and say their best friend just LOVED the card they sent them. It's good to know my art is out there and people are enjoying it....

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I LOVE doing custom orders.....If I have a card listing and the saying or pattern paper doesn’t work for you just let me know and I’ll recreate it...Of if I have paper piecings created and you want to make a small change like size or color no problem just let me know.....

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Just keep at it, when I first started selling online things were slow. But I built up a wonderful group of regular buys that keep coming back each week and that’s what’s so great. I've gotten to know some of these ladies and chat with them everyday even if they haven’t bought something from me that day/week.....

Do you have studio tips on staying organized and working efficiently?
My house is small and with 2 kids it’s even smaller...I just try to make sure everything is cleaned up and organized and make the best use of what space I have....

Where would like to be in 10 years?
I would LOVE to see my cards and paper piecings in a boutique somewhere...Both of my boys will be in school by then and I’m sure I’ll be back in to work force but I’ll always make time for paper crafting....

Being creative is a huge part of me. I have been this way my whole life. It really feels like what my true self should be doing. Being creative in any way makes me happy.

When a doll's face is finished, it feels like a real soul being born. I love that part because I feel a rush of energy to finish this little being who wants to become whole and take on the world.

Definitely sculpting hands! I really don't enjoy doing that. Cooking elves would be good too since I forget to eat when I am working. (I have a roomful of my elves watching me work, but they are not very helpful!)

Find a way to display your finished work and works in progress in sight of your work area. It really helps me to see the full picture.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
I am trying to be! My sister (BumblebeeBaby) and my mom (PrettyNifty) and I do craft fairs together and we all would love to be more succesfull in our crafting.

How long have you been in business?
We have been crafting since early childhood, selling bookmarks made with glitter and shoestrings and such... but we have "officially" been selling our crafts for a little over a year.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
About 40% of MY income is... just enough to buy more supplies really! The rest is from craft fairs, we only do a couple a year.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
Lots!! I use to do a lot of custom work, but now I am trying to keep a stocked store with new puppets, accessories and a lot of more shabby chic projects and ACEO's. Plus, I just started my new jewelry shop, so that is going to be lots of fun!

What do you utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Country Living magazine inspires me with colors, but I get most inspiration from reading, recipes, nature, music and movies. I went to The Paul Mitchell School (even had a photo shoot published), and they always encouraged us to be inspired by our surroundings (like nature) for new hair color and techniques. I try to apply those principles now.

How does being CREATIVE effective your life?
I would go nuts not being able to keep busy with my hands! Plus, whenever I sale something to a really neat place, I think "Wow... my work is going to Italy! Austraila! New York! or Mobile, Alabama!!" It is extremely rewarding to know that others enjoy my creativity, and I hope to pass that on to my children.

What do you love most about what you make?
I have a little sketch book that I make designs in. Usually something will pop in my head at 2 am, and I MUST write it down or I can't sleep. Funny, I used to write a LOT of poetry that way! So I love designing, and then the end product of course!

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I do all of those! I love to swap, as I meet so many cool people that way, and I love to advertise their awesomenes too, but I am trying to cut back as I am near broke after getting all new supplies for my jewelry shop. I am working up a wholesale contract and just got my first consignment order. I barter at craft fairs (who doesn't), and would consider it online... maybe, as I set a pretty low price for my time and materials.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Keep it organized! When my area is unorganized, I simply cannot create, because it is so frustrating trying to find those pinbacks, feathers, scissors or glue or whatever. Also, make time for it. I tell my husband that I'm "in the office" working (my table in the bedroom), and to only get me in emergencies (like to nurse or something.)

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
SEW! I am fine with handsewing little projects, but I have an irrational fear of the sewing machine. My sister, Bumblebee Baby and I sometimes swap jobs. She will sew my puppet bodies, and I will stuff her Spy Bags or give her fresh highlights and a haircut.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
Turn off the computer... I am so addicted to the forums, so I can't get anything done! If I work first, then I can play and promote on the internet. Also, get little plastic storage shelves or bins and have each set dedicated to one craft. My 2 year old destroys, pretty much everything, so I have to keep it all locked up and in place.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
I seriously feel guilty to buy a non-essential decorative item/jewelry or something from a store. I love knowing that people support my hard work, so I feel great joy in supporting other artists and craftspersons in theirs.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
We are a religious family, and I think with the media and social standards getting more relaxed everyday, I strive to make my home a safe haven and to teach my children uplifting principles that will make for a more freeing life. I also am all for nurturing the earth and recycling and of course adopting animals from shelters.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
Done with college, in a house with a yard and a pretty garden, and with my work being a substantial source of income. Maybe with 2 more little ones and pets.

No. I teach high school English and Spanish full-time, and also take courses online in a doctoral program through Liberty University in Virginia. Crafting is what comes after those two things and motherhood, etc. (unfortunately).

I opened my shop in February 2008.

Minimal. I've only had one sale so far! :) (Congratulations! ) :)

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
New things all the time. I'm constantly adding new items to my shop. Right now I'm working on adding more springtime, brightly colored items. Then I want to work on adding more embellishment options, and more baby items.

I find inspiration in the people around me. My children inspire me to make fun, whimsical things. I make other things based on the materials and how I think they will work best. I make still other things because I think about what my friends and I would like.

How does being CREATIVE affect your life?
Creativity is my outlet. My job is stressful, my graduate courses are stressful, motherhood is stressful. Having a creative outlet is what I do just for myself.

What do you love most about what you make?
I love the fact that when you make something by hand, you put a lot of thought into it, and you put a part of yourself into it. I make my items with love, hoping that someone else will enjoy having the item as much as I enjoyed making it.
Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
Yes, I would be open to any of that.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Just do it. I put this off for a long time, and I spent a long time making this creative outlet my last priority. Then I realized that I need this in order to be a better woman, wife, and mom. So I finally let myself be crafty even if everything else isn't completely done.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
They would be winding my yarn into proper balls and organizing my supplies.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
I'm not overly good at organization. What I try to do to work efficiently is to complete a few smaller projects in between large ones. So if I want to make a blanket (which is time-consuming), I make a few smaller items like iPod pouches first. That way I can spread out my listings on etsy while I work on the larger items.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
It's important to me because people don't make handmade items as much as they used to. When I was a baby, people made handmade gifts all the time. When my own kids were born, I got very few handmade items as gifts, and I cherished them all that much more because of that. When someone makes a gift by hand, they put a LOT of time and effort into making that gift wonderful for the person who receives it.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
I'm a mother of two preschoolers - I think that says it all.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
In Hawaii. I'd love to be in a nice big house with a big workroom and a giant closet for yarn and other crafting supplies...

My name is Stephanie Gibson. To my everlasting amazement, I live in the town where I was raised. In my twenties I lived in New York City, but when my husband and I decided to start a family, we were called back to Central PA by the affordable housing prices and grandparents
who offered free baby-sitting. I also I had some fantasies about a gigantic vegetable garden, but our first summer here brought me back to reality. Luckily, there are many farmers nearby who are happy to sell their homegrown goodies!
I have two children, ages 4 and 8.
When I am not busy with the kids or my jewelry business, I am reading a book.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
I am a stay-at-home mom, so, my income from my jewelry business is my only income, but I do not devote full-time hours to it. I squeeze design, jewelry making, photographing and all computer related business in between all the mom stuff. I hope my business will grow as my son
grows – as he has longer school days, I will have more time to devote to making and selling my jewelry.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
About 1/4 of my business is from Etsy. I also have a couple local wholesale accounts, and in 2007 I started selling at a local farmer’s market.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
Buying/Selling handmade strikes a blow against cultural homogenization created by the “big box” stores. At their best, handmade artisan items– items that are crafted by the people who have designed them - are a celebration of individuality and cultural diversity.

What do utilize most for INSPIRATION?
I am inspired by natural colors and materials.

What do you love most about what you make?
I love working with beads. I love the variety of colors and textures.
I dare anyone to open one of my bead boxes and resist touching the beads.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I welcome wholesale business and custom orders. Many custom orders result in design challenges that force me to think outside of my normal patterns and habits. I love that! For people in Central PA, I have recently started doing home parties, and offer wonderful hostess
rewards.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
I think it is very important to create what you love. Etsy makes it easy to see what sells and it is tempting to chase trends. However, I think the business of craft is far more enjoyable when the work you create comes from your heart. Otherwise, you are simply a manufacturer, and far more susceptible to burn-out.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
None. My studio is a disaster. I am constantly buying more headpins, because I think I am out of them. I reorganize my workspace quarterly, and I always find a ton of head pins I did not know I had.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
I am very happy right now, so I am hoping for more of the same.
Hopefully in 10 years I will have an established business, I will have more time to exercise and my kids will be independent-minded, respectful teenagers. Well, I can dream, can’t I?

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?
Yes, I guess you could say that! I was disabled in a car accident a few years back and since I can no longer "work" outside the home, sewing is something I can do when I feel like it

How long have you been in business?
Well, I've been sewing for 40+ years, and for many of those I've been sewing for family and friends, but I only decided back in August 2007 to take the plunge and try to make it a real business

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
right now very small!

What can your customers look forward to for 2008? More of the same I've had in the past, plus I will be adding more clothing (adults & kids) and I will start listing my laptop bags eventually

What do utilize most for INSPIRATION?
I'm inspired by many things, but fabrics just seem to tell me what they should be!
How does being CREATIVE effective your life? It gives me a huge satisfaction and also the ability to suppliment my disability income. It actually allows me to feel "useful" again and hopefully one day it will replace my need for the disability income!

What do you love most about what you make?
I enjoy seeing/hearing about peoples reactions to the items I make for them.

I welcome wholesale inquiries, and custom orders are my favorite!

Believe in yourself, or no one else will.

I would make them do the housework and cooking so I could stay in my sewing room!

Have a place for everything, and always TRY to return things to that place. Clear plastic containers are wonderful for storing supplies. Label them, and you can also "see" what's inside. Know what you have in stock.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
I just prefer the quality of handmade vs. store bought! I also like knowing that the person creating the item is doing it because it is something they love, not just a way to make a paycheck.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?
I'm just an independent person in general.

Where would like to be in 10 years?
I would like to be able to be totally independent and no longer have any need for disability.

What do you create & sell?
I started by selling baby blankets and baby accessories on consignment at a local boutique.
From there I began receiving orders by referral/word of mouth. When that started to slow down, a friend introduced me to Etsy. Although my sales have been slow, I've made a few and that's encouraging enough to keep going.

How long have you been in business?
I've been selling items for the past 5 years but only since Oct 2007 on Etsy.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
Not much SO FAR...I'm working on that though...hence, this interview :)

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist?
I have a four year old son and he comes first. So, it's the independence and freedom to work when and where you like that appeals to me.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008
I've recently delved back into photography (after buying a great new camera), and jewelry.
I majored in Textiles in college so I'm most comfortable working in that medium. But when I started branching out and trying new things I felt that surge of inspiration again.
So, I'm going to keep exploring and see what happens.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Oh, that would be wonderful...let's see, first off they could organize the "dreaded craft closet". THAT would help immensely! Then I suppose I'd have them help me with all the tedious parts of each project - Leaving me with all the FUN!

I've attached some photos of my "studio"/work space. Prior to having my son, I had a fantastic studio space...then, it became a fantastic nursery!
Now, I've gone from an entire room to a small Crate & Barrel Secretary - BIG CHANGE but I'm making it work!

Not much yet! I have 19 sales from Etsy, but the bulk of my sales still come from local events, shops and word of mouth custom work, and private shows

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist?
I like the creative process... I love designing, sitting at the torch or the bench- the trial and error quality of it... Trying new things, I also love being a part of the art community both online and locally

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
More glass!!! New glass vessels, some new riveted metal designs and lots of vintage KEYS...i am way into old keys right now. There are a couple in my Etsy shop as we speak!

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Accounting... Hate dealing with the paperwork that goes with money! :)

My name is Sarah Franklin and I live in Manchester, UK. I trained as a graphic designer but have had a very long standing affair with photography which has now turned into a major obsession.

I will be a full time photographer from June, when my current job comes to an end.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
Currently my online income is very low which isn’t really a problem as I have a day job which pays my bills! That will be changing soon which is why I’m doing this interview as part of my push to promote myself and my work.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...
There’s so much rubbish for sale in the shops and when we come across some of the many talented people out in the world making pretty much everything you could imagine and usually for a very fair price it’s a great shame not to buy their lovingly crafted goods, whether it’s a pair of cufflinks, a mug or a beautiful print for your wall. I just really like the idea of owning/selling something which has been made by a real person. I also like the interaction between the buyers and sellers, that’s something you’ll never get from your average high street shop.

What do utilize most for INSPIRATION?
Everything around me!

What do you love most about what you make?
I love the whole process of making pictures, actually taking the picture is such a thrill, that I don’t mind if some of the pictures never make it off my computer, it was enough for me to just to ‘see something’ and to press the shutter. I also love the moment when the print pops out of the printer and you see it for the first time.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?
I’ll do custom orders if people want any of my prints on a different paper or to a different size. Commissions are also possible, for example if an artist likes my Artist’s Studios series and wants me to come and take pictures in their studios, I’ll be very happy to discuss prices and other stuff. Customers should feel free to ask anything, and if I can oblige, I will.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?
Just keep at it even if you don’t seem to be selling much, don’t fall out of love with what you do!

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?
No, I’m very disorganized and have the smallest work space ever. It’s so small that my lovely new printer is in the room next door (the sitting room!) on a trolley on wheels with its USB cable going through a hole in the wall to my iMac!

Where would like to be in 10 years?
Traveling the world with my camera with some exciting photo projects in mind and an army of eager, wealthy fans waiting for my return!

My name is Jennifer and I am an accidental artist in Tampa, FL. I have an unbelievable love of all things paper and an addiction to purchasing art supplies. I started designing stationery about 8 years ago when I worked in a small stationery store and did all their printing. I realized that I could design at home and make cooler stuff.

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?

I wish! I am a full time stay at home mom with twin 2.5 year olds. My days are mostly spent picking food up off the floor, but I find that oddly inspiring.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?

Probably about 30% at the moment. Most of my business is word of mouth so I usually have a lot of custom work which brings in more money.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...

Well the obvious answer is to support other peoples work, but for me I find it so challenging to finding unique items in retail chains. I like to surround myself with things that mean something. Handmade has meaning and history.

What do utilize most for INSPIRATION?

Time and space. Seriously, I get so little of it that when I do I spend it outside and that is where I draw from.

What do you love most about what you make?

Well, I love that I made it. I am self taught and really fell into this so whenever something turns out I am always so surprised and giddy. And when someone buys something I literally bounce off the walls all day. But truly, it's paper, and I love paper!

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?

Most of my orders are custom. I also love when someone says to me that they have a love of something specific and I can put it into a design for them! I would love to offer wholesale. I haven't ever swapped or bartered, but I am not opposed to it!

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?

I'm hardly in a position to give advice. I will say that I have been at this for a long time and I finally think it is coming together for me. So my advice is simply, don't give up!

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?

Oh no, not me. I am a mother to twin toddlers. It's all I can do to get myself dressed!

Where would like to be in 10 years?

I would like to be in a medium size business doing what I love and having the security to be making a living at it.

My name is Morgan Constantino, I live on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (born and raised!). I am 23 years old and just graduated from college this past May with a degree in Archaeology, minoring in Classical Studies and Religion. I chose "Karma" for my jewelry business name because it is an all too real concept to me and I feel that such a circular concept belongs naturally with jewelry. Pick out good jewelry (a good choice!) and you will in turn feel better and good things will happen!

Are you a full-time artist/crafter?

I am a full-time crafter. I had another job working at a beautiful bead store, but I realized I needed to focus more on myself as an artist and really focus on the business side of the business.

How long have you been in business?

I have officially been selling since October of 2007.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?

I would say I do about 10% is from online sales. I get most of my sales from personal visits or shows I have put on.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?

A lot more variety and different styles. I have been working hard on getting my wire work up to a new level and have been experimenting a lot. I am self-taught so I am always looking to elevate my work. Also look for a lot more pure-silver pieces.

What do utilize most for INSPIRATION?

I love being outside, the colors and contrasts really help me put colors and designs together that - to me - seem naturally correct. I also get inspiration from my friends and family with their love and support.

How does being CREATIVE effective your life?

Being creative makes me feel like I am running a marathon in my mind, taking from the past 16 years of being in learning institutions, traveling, meeting new people, playing sports, and observing - enables me to tap into all that I know in my mind and produce interesting and one of a kind pieces.

What do you love most about what you make?

I love that it can really make someone's mood and attitude change when they find something I made that makes them feel beautiful.

Do you offer any services such as, wholesale, custom orders, swapping or bartering?

I offer wholesale, custom orders, and USPS Priority Mail shipping. I haven't swapped or bartered yet.

What advice can you share with other artists/crafters?

Keep going! Always take the time to try new things and to better yourself as an artist. I think it is really easy to get caught up doing something else, but to set aside time and make something is so rewarding for yourself and potentially (hopefully) for the person it ends up with.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?

Haha. I wish I had them! Find all the little beads I have dropped and I would love if they made coffee.

Do you have studio tips on staying organized, and working efficiently?

Being organized is so important. My advice is be organized in a way that you know you can handle. Don't make it too complicated and always organize so that you can find just what you are looking for. I bought a few of the organizers with drawers from Lowes for smaller tools and screws, etc. They work wonderfully and I labeled all of them with my labeler. Everything in my studio I can pretty much get within reach. This makes me more effective and productive. I also bring my laptop and pop in good movies or series such as Arrested Development and the Office.

Please share why "buying/selling handmade" is important to you...

I love the idea of knowing that what I am making is different that a lot of pieces you see in stores. What I am making you will NOT see on everyone. I hand select my beads and findings and know that I am getting exactly what I want to make a variety of different pieces. I took the "Handmade Pledge" this holiday season and told everyone! I really did buy all handmade gifts OR made them myself. It was an important step for me, and the gifts all went over extremely well. People felt they were more personalized and original.

Besides creating & selling handmade goods, in what other areas of your life do strive to be 'independent, resourceful, & creative"?

As a recent college graduate, I am always looking to be independent, resourceful, and creative! My mind was just filled with knowledge about so many different things and I am beginning to really process what I know and how what I know shows through in my jewelry and in my life. ****come back to this one ****

Where would like to be in 10 years?

I would like to still be creating even if my business falls through. I would like to be married, maybe have a kid or two by then. I would like to be happy and healthy.

What do you create & sell?
I started off scrapbooking and wandered into papercrafts. I love the look and feel of papers, and I am always taking pictures of my boys and family so I wanted to incorporate that into my creations. I display photos all over the house and my frames make it easy to change them on a weekly/whenever basis. That is my space I'm in right now, but I am always looking for other creative avenues.

How long have you been in business?
I have been creating as long as I can remember, but selling for about 2 years now.

What percentage of your income is from "online" sales?
I would say about 50%. I mainly do craft shows - I like the personal interaction, but it is very exciting when you sell online to someone in a different part of the world.

What do you love most about being an Indie-Artist?
The ability to do whatever I want in the creative process. I truly put my soul into my work and connecting to others through that is an added bonus.

What can your customers look forward to for 2008?
I am hoping to have more TIME to create this year- it has been very part-time, so I am trying to organize myself so I will have more studio time this year. I love metal and magnetics, so I will be doing more frames and memo boards, and want to get into a yearly calendar format like my Christmas advent ones.

If you had "studio elves" what job would you give them to do?
Shipping!!! That is the part I like the least- packaging and getting the product out the door. Where are the elves for that??

There's so much craziness going on right now regarding the 2008 presidential elections. Really the only voting power Americans is through the power of their purchasing dollar! That's where the slogan comes from. Throughout every day we have to opportunity to be involved directly in where this world is headed. By simply being conscious about the big picture, and striving to support our sisters & brothers (real human beings), and NOT big, corporate business, CEOs, and stock holders...we're making a HUGE difference for the better!

The conditioning isn't easy to break the cycle of...first and foremost we need to RE-define words like "convenience", and "bargain". Is it a bargain if it only last a few months, exploits people, and resources, and contaminates our planet? Is it convenient if in the long-run it makes us sick, deteriorates our health, or leaves a mess on the hands of the future generations?

Of course, "interest" and "having time" are two different things. I think 2008 has been pretty hectic thus far for everyone; strange, new paradigm vibe to get into the groove of, but I feel it will eventually pay-off for all us 'wonky' folk!
